Princess Opeyemi Bright: UK’s Youngest Mayor and a Role Model for African Women Leaders

Leadership

In a world where youth and leadership are often viewed as incompatible, Princess Opeyemi Bright stands as living proof that boldness, brilliance, and a commitment to service transcend age. Recently appointed as the youngest serving mayor in the United Kingdom, Princess Opeyemi at just 29 years old is not only making history but also redefining what it means to lead with vision, courage, and authenticity.

At Face of Congeniality Nigeria (FOCN), we are committed to nurturing a new generation of African women who will not only sit at decision-making tables but also build their own. Princess Opeyemi Bright embodies the very essence of this mission.

A Heritage of Leadership, A Future of Influence

Princess Opeyemi’s story is deeply rooted in a legacy of service. Raised in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham to Nigerian parents, her upbringing was steeped in values of civic responsibility and cultural pride. Her mother, Councillor Afolasade Bright, is a veteran political figure and former Mayor of the London Borough of Hackney, demonstrating that the spirit of leadership runs deep in her family.

At the remarkable age of 22, Opeyemi Bright was elected as the youngest councillor in her borough, representing the Eastbrook and Rush Green ward. Fast forward just a few years, and she now serves as the First Citizen of Barking and Dagenham, a borough with a rich cultural diversity and a growing youth population.

Why Her Story Matters to African Women

To many, Princess Opeyemi Bright is a political figure. But to us at FOCN, she is more of a symbol of possibility.

Her rise to the mayoralty is not just a personal victory; it is a powerful message to young African women everywhere: your voice matters. Your age does not disqualify you. Your dreams are valid.

Her journey breaks barriers on multiple fronts: as a Black woman, a young person, and the child of immigrants, she represents groups that are often underrepresented in public office. Yet, she has shown that representation is not just about presence it’s about purpose, advocacy, and action.

Leadership That Reflects Community

In her new role as mayor, Princess Bright has committed to serving as a bridge between the government and the community, with a particular focus on youth empowerment, education, and inclusivity. She has expressed a strong desire to see more young people enter politics, speak up, and shape their environments.

In her own words:

Young people must know that they have the right to be heard. Leadership is not a distant goal, it’s a daily choice to serve, speak out, and step up.”

This aligns beautifully with FOCN’s leadership training model, which combines mentorship, hands-on experience, and personal development to equip African women to lead with confidence and character.

What We Can Take from Her Story
  1. Start Now:  Opeyemi didn’t wait to be “ready.” She stepped into leadership as a young woman still finding her voice- and found her power in the process.

  2. Use Your Roots as Fuel: Her heritage as a Nigerian was not a hurdle; it was a strength. At FOCN, we teach our women to embrace their identity and leverage it as a leadership asset.

  3. Lead Where You Are: Leadership isn’t always about being at the top. Opeyemi started locally, served diligently, and grew into a role that is now recognized globally.

A Call to Rise

As we celebrate Princess Opeyemi Bright’s achievements, we also issue a call to young African women in our network and beyond: step into your greatness. The world is in desperate need of leaders who are compassionate, community-oriented, and bold enough to challenge the status quo. If she can, so can you!

At FOCN, we’re not just watching history- we’re preparing the women who will make it.
