Breaking Barriers: Anita Okunde Becomes the First Black Woman Oxford Union President

Anita Okunde

The Face of Congeniality Nigeria (FOCN) celebrates a momentous milestone in global leadership and representation as Anita Okunde, a 20-year-old award-winning activist, has shattered ceilings to become the first-ever Black woman president of the prestigious Oxford Union. This groundbreaking achievement is a powerful testament to her vision, resilience, and unwavering commitment to inclusion and intersectional justice.

Anita Okunde, a student of Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) at Oxford University, is no stranger to leadership or advocacy. She has long championed issues of intersectional climate justice and feminism, earning accolades for her tireless activism and public speaking. As an I Will Ambassador, Anita has used her platform to address pressing global issues, and her election as the Oxford Union president represents the culmination of years of dedication to meaningful change.

Reflecting on her historic win, Anita expressed her gratitude and faith:

“President-elect and a proud state school president built not bought, a dying breed! It has been an honour, and I cannot wait to serve as your president. All the glory be to God, honestly, John 15:7.”

Anita’s campaign for the presidency was marked by her focus on making the Oxford Union more accessible and inclusive. She highlighted her track record of achievements, such as organizing the union’s first Black History Month Dinner and Exhibition, hosting socioeconomic debating workshops, and introducing initiatives like professional headshot sessions to deliver practical benefits to members.

Her campaign theme, “Bridge Codes,” sought to honor the union’s rich history while enhancing the member experience. Under this theme, Anita introduced initiatives named after key moments in the union’s legacy, such as 1968, the year the first female president was elected. This approach highlighted her dedication to fostering transparency, inclusivity, and engagement among union members.

Anita’s victory in the Trinity Term 2024 election, with 564 first preferences and a margin of 44 votes, is a historic achievement not just for her but also for all underrepresented groups striving for representation in elite spaces. Her win marks a new era for the Oxford Union, symbolizing progress and hope for a more diverse and equitable future.

This achievement also underscores the importance of young women stepping into leadership roles to drive change and inspire others. Anita’s journey reminds us that representation matters, and her leadership will undoubtedly serve as a beacon for others to follow.

FOCN celebrates Anita Okunde’s incredible achievement, recognizing it as a moment of pride for all women of African descent breaking barriers on the global stage. This success story aligns with our mission of empowering young women to lead with courage, purpose, and vision.

Let us all draw inspiration from Anita’s story as we continue to challenge norms, amplify marginalized voices, and create a world where leadership reflects the diversity of human potential.
